Genre: Horror
Word Count: Approx. 80,000

Synopsis:
SUNDOWNERS is a backwoods southern horror about the
importance of family, the power of gossip and the nature of the artistic muse.
Fifteen years ago, siblings Coil and Cassiopeia suffered an
incident in the woods behind their family home. An incident that neither of
them can remember in full, that nearly killed Cass and left Coil accused as her
abuser, and robbed young Coil of his artistic potential yet boosted his little
sister into an almost overnight sensation in the art world. Now, fifteen years
later, the self-exiled Coil has been called home to deal with his world famous
sister as she suffers from Sundowning; severe and violent personality shifts
after the sun sets. In order to cure her, the pair of siblings must come to
terms with their old demons, both figuratively and literally. An ancient and
terrible horror has risen once more from the backwoods of the family home, and
this time it threatens to not only tear their family apart, but also the entire
world.

Guest Post by Tonia:
Three things I learned while writing Sundowners.
Writing a novel is like taking a couple of college courses
all at once. You are always learning new things, be it just general knowledge
or even a little something about yourself.
The first thing I learned while working on Sundowners was of
course about the medical condition of Sundowner’s Syndrome itself. It is an
unusual phenomenon associated with Alzheimer and other forms of dementia. Some
folks start suffering confusion early in the afternoon, while others don’t
start until after full dark. It is considered a medical mystery, though there
are tons of theories surrounding the syndrome. Everything ranging from over
stimulation during the daylight hours, to the confusion brought on by decreased
vision at night. It is really fascinating.
The second thing I learned was something my husband pointed
out: If you’re going to go, go whole hog, or don’t go at all. In other words,
don’t just take people to the edge of the pit, push them in then sit back watch
them fall! Specifically, I was working on a disturbing scene that involved some
mutilation. (A chapter of the novel I ended up calling “Pitter Patter.”) In the
original form, the chapter was a lot milder, with threats of harm to those
involved, but with no real results. I read it to my husband and, being honest
as always, he told me it was weak. He warned me that if I wanted to keep true
to the horror of the work, I needed to go all the way. So I rewrote it, and
yes, it is much stronger, and much more gruesome.
The last thing I got from the work was a lesson in
persistence. I began working on the novel mid 2010, but didn’t complete it
until mid 2012. Normally, I like to focus on a single novel, writing and
writing until I get a rough draft banged out and then go on from there. But
nothing went as planned with Sundowners. I started it with the best of
intentions of finishing it in a few months. A few weeks into it I hit a wall.
Nothing was working. The characters weren’t speaking to me, the story was dead
in the water, and I was royally frustrated. So I did what any good writer
should, I tucked the progress away and got on with other projects until I could
get back to it.
I did get back to it, but not just once.
It happened four times.
Over the course of two years I approached this novel four
different times. The next time I came to the novel, I found it hard to stay
with. The book goes to some very dark places and I didn’t like being there. So
I hightailed it out of that place as soon as I could.
They say third time’s a charm, but in this case it was the
fourth try that stuck it. Who knows what happened that made it work that last
time? Perhaps the stars were aligned just right, or I was in the correct frame
of mind to tell the story, or those inner demons holding me back finally found
something else to play with. All I know is that if I hadn’t tried that one last
time, I would’ve never finished it. And considering just how awesome the story
turned out, I am glad I persisted.
